Coding Horror: How To Advertise on Your Blog Without (Completely) Selling Out
I’m a regular reader of Jeff Atwood’s blog and I have always admired his lack of ads, having said that- I completely support his new decision to place ads on his site.
I don’t even need the qualifier he offers:
I will be donating a significant percentage of my ad revenue back to the programming community. The programming community is the reason I started this blog in the first place. The programming community is what makes this blog possible. It’s an open secret amongst bloggers that the blog comments are often better than the original blog post, and it’s because the community collectively knows far more than you or I will ever know.
I have always been puzzled by peoples opposition to ads especially on sites with great content like jeff offers. We don’t live in shangra-la people. Things cost money.
How the hell are we supposed to pay for bandwidth? Also, why is it bad to hope that you get rich off of something you spend a little time on, even something trivial and aimless as this tumble log I’ve got going here. In short if you judge me a sellout for trying to pay for my bandwidth with ads or even (I hope) get rich then you can go straight to hell.
Cheers.
